FAVOURITE PINS

Our Eye Candies of the Week are quickly becoming Pinterest pins – It is really hard to just choose one great thing per week when we have so many things to appreciate on Pinterest every day.

Yes, I am a self proclaimed Pinssesed – I just love to be able to see beautiful things everyday and organize them and be able to look them again and again.  As a designer I am a very visual person, and playing with Pinterest has given me a tool to be inspired constantly.  Also Pinterest has allowed me to re-discover what I really like and what really moves me as a designer.  I only pin things and images that fulfill my design needs.  In this way, Pinterest is a true window to my preferences as a designer.

Here are some of my favourite pins.  Images that have also become inspiration for the work we are doing at Meade Design Group.

Well, I guess Lady Gaga has found a designer that can relate to her innovative approach to design.

This trendy collection consists of six furniture pieces inspired by the curvaceous lines of 1930s upholstery, contrasted with modern stud detailing in either gold or gunmetal. The finished result is a polished, contemporary furniture range that echoes the iconic designs of luxury fashion accessories and punk rock couture.

These pieces are very sexy now, but do you think they will stand the test of time?

EYE CANDY OF THE WEEK – ARCADE CENTER TABLE BY THOMAS PHEASANT

image

PRODUCT

Arcade Center Table

MANUFACTURER

Baker

DESIGNER

Thomas Pheasant

MATERIAL

Mahogany solids

Giorgio Limestone top

DIMENSIONS

Height: 28 3/4 inches
Diameter: 34 inches

DESCRIPTION

This piece is definitely a  great lesson in geometry, and  rhythm.    The arch is not a very common geometric form to be found in furniture, so when it is used properly the arch can create a fantastic piece like the Arcade Table.  A piece designed by Thomas Pheasant that combines  his preference for traditional  lines with clean and contemporary approach.

“From the Colosseum of Rome to Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, the arch is unique among architectural elements in its ability to move us. Its sense of perspective inspired Thomas Pheasant to create the Arcade series of tables. Through the kind of craftsmanship often reserved for a custom shop, a total of 10 sections are simultaneously cut on a radius, from very thick stock, shaped, tapered left, tapered right, tapered vertically, and hand fit to a perfect circle. The result is the kind of perspective sought by a sculptor, luring us to it, evidence that the hand can master and evolve all the mind can imagine. “ – Baker

EYE CANDY OF THE WEEK – MAMA VASE BY ILSE CRAWFORD

Ilse Crawford

PRODUCT

Mama Vase

MANUFACTURER

Georg Jensen

DESIGNER

Ilse Crawford

MATERIAL

Mirror Polish Stainless Steel

MEASUREMENTS

335 x 215 x 228 mm

DESCRIPTION

Inspired by the nature of daily rituals.  This new line by Ilse Crawford for Georg Jensen brings sensuous forms to every day objects.  I love the voluptuousness of the piece and its clean forms.  This is definitely an everyday Object d’Art where aesthetics and function are clearly working together.

“Voluptuous yet lean, feminine yet stripped to the essentials of its architecture, the Mama Vase is perfectly proportioned.

London-based designer Ilse Crawford has long been a champion of the clean lines and understated elegance that is associated with Scandinavian design. The magic of Mama is in its duality. Though composed with meticulous constraint, it
has a spirit of pure joy.”- Georg Jensen

EYE CANDY OF THE WEEK – bjhon ii sink by angelo mangiarotti

image

PRODUCT

Bjhon II Sink

MANUFACTURER

Agape

DESIGNER

Angelo Mangiarotti

MATERIAL

Cristalplant Marble or Pietra

DESCRIPTION

The Bjohn II sink retrieves an original idea by Angelo Mangiarotti of 1970. The collection, made in marble or pietra calls to mind classic garden planters with a minimal line.

This sculptural pedestal sink, with truncated cone shape column containing the central wastepipe, reminds me of the classism of Palladio’s lines, with the edge of Mangiarotti’s concepts.

But you may ask, who is Angelo Mangiarotti?

“Angelo Mangiarotti, is one of the leading exponents of 20th-century Italian design, a committed, cultured and brilliant designer, who took on the ideals of the Modern Movement and actually exceeded them through his experimental and highly original work, a Mies with the mind of an engineer, a freer and more creative Prouvé, a more multifaceted and experimental Nervi, and even a Brancusi drawing on the technology of his own time: because Mangiarotti managed to apply his own ingenuity to both architecture and design, a razor-sharp exponent of rigorous functionalism, who, however, never lost sight of elegance and beauty, taking his own work to the very verge of sculpture through clever studies of form, always using cutting-edge production processes and materials backed up by proper know-how and, above all, thinking, constantly drawing on ethical principles and a deep awareness of moral values, unique traits of this master, who, by brilliantly bringing together the dual qualities of ethics and aesthetics, has achieved “happiness” through “correctness”.” – Agape

EYE CANDY OF THE WEEK – NEST BOWL BY stephane parmentier

image

PRODUCT

Nest Bowl

MANUFACTURER

Christofle

DESIGNER

Stéphane Parmentier

FINISH

Silver Plated

DIMENSIONS

Extra Small with Spoon, Small, Medium & Large

DESCRIPTION

I love the clean lines of this piece.  Simple, yet unique.  This is the type of piece I wish I had designed.   Interior Designer Stéphane Parmentier had the opportunity to collaborate recently with Chirstopfle in a new exquisite line of decorative pieces.

The silver-plated Nest bowls come in four sizes: XS, which is lilliputian and includes a spoon for salt and pepper; S, M and L, which can be used as centerpieces to hold fruit, for example, or simply as exquisite decorative objects.

“I wanted to express the ambivalence of opposites,” explains Stéphane Parmentier. “A juxtaposition of extremes, between linearity and curves. Paradoxes condensed into a single object, where the boundaries are imperceptible. ”

DESCRIPTION

Characterized by its rhythmic composition, this light fixture will bring a sense of glamour to any space.  This fixture has the right balance of black and Gold or Chrome.  Its clean lines make it memorable and easy to blend with any style.

Lately it has been difficult to find something unique that really excites me for the eye candy section.  It seems that we are in a time where everything has been already done or it is a new interpretation of a past idea, which seems to be the case of this particular eye candy.  What I like about this light fixture and company is the quality of their products and the time that they take to put together a piece.  There is a process and not only a machine made item.

COLLECTION

Classic Colours

DESCRIPTION

As a designer, I like the art pieces in my interior design projects to stand out and be the protagonists of the room. Sometimes I play with theatricality, other times I want the piece to blend in and become part of the space, but in the end I want these pieces to have the best background possible.

I usually select my colour palettes to complement the art pieces, but to let the background maintain a dialogue with the materials, fabrics and furnishings used in the space. When I found out that “The Guggenheim” had launched a new paint collection my initial thought was  ‘another one!?’, but when I reviewed the colours and learned that the colours have been inspired by their art collection, my initial thought went away.

“This colour collection reflects the Guggenheim’s celebrated collection of modern masterpieces, and recreates the color palette of artists such as Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Robert Delaunay, Giorgio de Chirico, and Vasily Kandinsky. Each color was carefully chosen from paintings in the Guggenheim galleries. The selection was then refined in consultation with exhibition designers to ensure the colors are appropriate for a variety of architectural settings. Fine Paints of Europe precisely matched each color and created the final formulations.”

- Guggenheim Colour

Unfortunately, this collection is only available as an international order and according to the reviews, this environmentally friendly paint is on the pricey side. My thoughts on this: if you can’t purchase a Master at least you can have a master’s palette in your home, and if you happen to have a master in your home - like a Picasso or a Miro - why not complement the painting with a wall paint of equal quality? In the end, the claim to fame for this collection is the hue and the value of their colour selections, the quality of the paint and the fact that for more than 50 years the background colours at the Guggenheim museum have been extremely well received. For me, one of the things I have always admired in art is the use of colour and I personally think that this collection is onto something big.

DESCRIPTION

I have been a fan of Tareq’s work for several years now.  I have also seen how much he has grown as a furniture designer with the clever reinvention of his brand, and the launch of Voi-Artis.  While browsing Tareq’s updated website I came across this new fantastic piece that I needed to share with you.

I love the lines and the weight of the Flamingo Console – The legs are definitely my favourite part – They are so sculptural and clean.  The asymmetric lines create a different sense of rhythm to the piece, which makes it unique and memorable.

I would love to use the Flamingo Console in a foyer and juxtapose it with an antique portrait and a very cool contemporary light fixture.

How/Where would you use this piece?

Eye Candy of the Week – The Senz° Original

image

image

PRODUCT

The Senz°

MANUFACTURER

Senz

COLLECTION

The Senz° Original

DESCRIPTION

This winter has been a very rainy one, looking to be as stylish as I can be in these weather conditions; I decided to source a very unique/cool and sophisticated umbrella.   Once I found this beauty I though, I had found my perfect match, but also a great eye candy of the week. Brilliant!

Due to its aerodynamic design, the Senz umbrella always finds the best position in the wind, which makes it exceptionally comfortable to use. Which proves that every day objects can always improve. This award-winning asymmetrical wonder can withstand winds up to 100 km per hr.  A good fact to take in consideration as we have had very strong gales lately.

I wonder what umbrella Mary Poppins would pick if she was in  search of a good one. Now here is the only bummer, I love the umbrella (the sparkling silver is my favourite), but I wonder why we can’t order the queen of the umbrellas in North America yet.  What is wrong with you? Don’t you know you will have enough costumers in the west coast of North America!

Eye Candy of the Week – Lui5 & Lui6 Arm Chair

Lui5 by Phillipe Bestenheider

PRODUCT

Lui5 & Lui6 Arm Chair

MANUFACTURER

Fratelli Boffi

DESIGNER

Philippe Bestenheider

MATERIAL

wooden frame with hand-woven caning

DIMENTIONS

103/72/123 cm

DESCRIPTION

I just discovered this beauty!  As you well know by now:  old world + new world = my favourite combo ever in anything.  The use of the pentagon shape makes this chair simple yet, elegant in its complexity. The mix of materials has enough tension to bring the piece to a new place.  The Lui5 by Philippe Bestenheider is definitely a statement chair, and I can see that it may not be too comfortable, but I just  love so much the lines, the presence and the memorability that has keeping me thinking about the fact that I wish I could design something like this.

To even bring this piece further you have to see the Lui6 – I just want a pair for my country home and a pair for my sleek city pad. But first I need to get my country home and then to make sleek my city pad.

image Lui6 by Phillipe Bestenheider

Which one is your favourite and why?

The Lui5 armchair looks back to the early 20th century in Europe. The classic wooden chair with cane seat serves as point of reference. The curved soft forms of the original model, however, are abandoned in favour of simplified lines and crystallised forms that multiply in space. The name is a clear reference to the pentagonal form which becomes the unit of measure of the structure. It is repeated from the cross-section of the legs to the construction of the panels forming the seat, back and armrests. Lui5 is also available in an upholstered version. – Philippe Bestenheider.

DIMENTIONS

DESCRIPTION

The Papyri Octagonal Cocktail has all the qualities that make a piece of furniture memorable.  First of all, I love furniture that is transitional –The Papayri Cocktail table can look as good in a contemporary setting as it can in a traditional one, the quality of the materials are exceptional, and overall has a distinctive design that will bring a quite but profound conversation to any room.

The shape of this table is so unconventional and is one of my favourite parts of this piece.   Lately, I have been tiring of round and square tables, so finding a shape as simple as an octagon makes a world of difference.  I love the scale of the table and the subtle design on the top that really draws your eye to its center.  The legs are like fine stilettos carrying the weight of the design.

Can you tell that I want one! just a little ;)
